MMA Gear Guide For BeginnersPrimary Equipment

MMA TRAINING GLOVESMMA training gloves will drastically reduce cuts and bruises to your sparring partner as opposed to 4oz MMA fight gloves. You absolutely want to use MMA training gloves for ground and pound training instead of MMA fight gloves. |

SPARRING GLOVES Sparring gloves are larger than common-use gloves which minimize punching impact to protect your sparring partner. The common size boxing gloves used for sparring are 16oz. |

SHIN GUARDS Shin guards protect your shins from injury and excessive bruising. Even fighters with most exceptionally hard shins use shin guards to ensure the longevity of their training.

GROIN PROTECTOR Next to sharks, heights, and lightening, groin injuries are one of the experiences feared most by man since the dawn of time. Groin protectors are a must-have for training Muay Thai, kickboxing, and mixed martial arts. Groin protectors are optional for grappling.

MOUTH GUARDNot only do you need a mouth guard to kep your grill intact, but a good mouth guard can actually lessen the chance of being knocked out..

HANDWRAPS Handwraps protect your wrist and the small bones in your hands called metacarpals. Handwraps are a must for hard sparring. Arm strikes consisting of elbows and palm strikes are the least likely to cause self-injury. Punches are the most likely to cause injury because metacarpal bones are very delicate.

MMA SHORTS MMA shorts are on our must-have list because of one reason—durability. Also referred to as "fight shorts," MMA shorts are different than your average pair of fitness shorts and surf industry board shorts. You must have shorts that can withstand the rigors of mixed martial arts training.

Additional Equipment

HEAD GEAR
Head gear prevents headaches and concussions. MMA head gear is an optional piece of equipment because it is generally used during medium and hard sparring. Beginners should only spar light until you establish a base of boxing, kickboxing, and/or Muay Thai. Beginners should only spar under professional trainer supervision.

MMA FIGHT GLOVES
MMA fight gloves are primarily used for MMA competition, but some fighters wear MMA fight gloves while training Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and submission grappling to become familiar with the different grips associated with wearing MMA gloves in comparison to training with bare hands.

BAG GLOVESBag gloves force you to use proper form when training bag work and pad work by causing you to feel discomfort when not using the proper punching form. You may easily break your hand if you use sloppy punching form with 4oz MMA gloves. Bag gloves also save your sparring gloves from fast wear. |

JUMP ROPE
Jumping rope is used for conditioning, foot work, and rhythm. Jumping rope is also a very good way to warm up. All top level boxing, Muay Thai, and MMA gyms do rope work
